Wastewater Treatment Facility

Wastewater Treatment Facility
The City of Port Wentworth Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF) serves Port Wentworth and surrounding areas. This 2.0 MGD reclamation facility is the first Zero Ultimate Oxygen Demand facility in the Southeastern United States. Choate Construction Company completed construction in Spring 2011. The facility, designed by Port City Design Group, LLC, is located just off O’Leary Road between EMD Chemicals and the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge.

The state-of-the-art WWTF helps eliminate a non-compliant point source for pollution and improves the water quality in the Savannah River, which benefits the entire ecosystem. The facility is designed to treat 2.0 MGD of wastewater and is expandable to 4.0 MGD. High-quality effluent that does not degrade the receiving stream and can be used for a variety of “reuse” activities such as lawn irrigation, is also produced at this site.

The facility includes an Administration Building with offices and a laboratory. Automated technology has been incorporated into the plant for operations from a single computer located inside the Administration Building. The WWTF will provide long-term economic benefits to the City of Port Wentworth by ensuring the continued availability of its wastewater treatment capacity to accommodate future growth needs of the City.
