The City of Port Wentworth Development Services Department performs the permitting and inspections functions of the City. Its mission is to ensure quality construction and compliance with Building and Zoning Codes, as well as confirm that all contractors are properly licensed for the safety and protection of Port Wentworth residents and businesses. This is accomplished through critical plan reviews, quality inspections, efficient processing of permits, and professional interaction with contractors, developers, property owners, businesses, and residents.
  • Building Permit applications can be obtained in person by visiting the Port Wentworth Development Services Department, 7306 GA Highway 21 Suite 301, Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. or may be downloaded here. Contractors must provide copies of current State certifications (general contractor, trade contractor or specialty contractor), plan drawings and the required permit fee(s) along with the Building Permit application.

  • A building permit is required for most new residential and commercial construction to erect, alter, repair, move or demolish a building or structure. A permit is also required to install or alter electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing equipment.

    If you need help in determining if a permit is required for your project, contact the City of Port Wentworth Development Services Department at 912-999-2084 prior to beginning any construction. 

    All new construction, major redevelopment / renovation and expansion of existing structures must be approved for a Land Development permit in conjunction with the building permit.
